Inside Energy/Harvest Public Media

How much energy did it take to make your dinner? From growing lettuce to grilling your steak, it takes a lot of fossil fuels to get food from the farm to our tables.

Inside Energy and Harvest Public Media investigated where all that energy goes, and how farmers, food processors and grocers are trying to cut down on their fossil fuel use.

Feasting On Fuel

Inside Energy is working with Harvest Public Media on a series of stories looking at how energy fuels our food system. You don’t really think about it, and probably don’t want to think about it, but essentially our modern food production system is based on turning fossil fuels into food. It is an incredibly inefficient system, with about 10 units of fossil energy converting to about 1 unit of food energy. It is also unsustainable as populations across the world continue to grow. So, how do we measure energy inputs, and how are we innovating to become more energy efficient in our food system? We’ll be taking a deep dive on the energy going INTO food, and how some food producers are finding ways of creating energy OUT of the food production system.

  • Fuel: It’s What’s For Dinner

Up to a fifth of our nation’s total energy use goes into growing, transporting, processing and eventually preparing our food, but those energy inputs are often hidden. In this first story in the Inside Energy and Harvest Public Media collaboration Feasting on Fuel, we look at one place they’re not.
