So far, Wyoming has largely managed to avoid the tensions over oil and gas development that have cropped up in other states. It’s not hard to imagine that it’s just a matter of time though, as companies have filed for hundreds of drilling permits in recent months in the vicinity of the state’s largest city, Cheyenne.
Oil and gas companies are working on new techniques to lower their on the ground impact. They hope this will help the public feel more at ease as drilling continues to move closer to homes and communities. The oil and gas industry dodged a bullet this year in Colorado. A last-minute compromise avoided a series of ballot measures that could have seriously restricted the industry’s ability to operate in the state.
But, many Colorado communities are still leery about the drilling they see right outside their door. So, oil companies are working hard to polish their public image, both through messaging and improving their techniques.
Political spending both for and against potential anti-fracking ballot measures is already washing over Colorado.
